My name is Maria Isabel and I am 57 years old. I am originally from Guatemala, but came to this country when I was 22 years old. I live in Carson City, and when something goes wrong, I go to Sierra Nevada Health Center near my house. I had not been to the doctor in a long time but this past week I had a fever and sore throat that wasn't getting better. I also have diabetes and I know that when I am sick it makes the sugar bad. I'm supposed to take a pill called Metformin for the diabetes. I take it when I remember.
I didn't want to go because right now I am having trouble with my landlord. He wants to sell the building and has talked about evicting me. I have lived there for twenty years. How can he make me go after all this time? I have four grown children; two are in Nevada and two live in Florida. My son, who lives in Reno, is trying to help me but he is so busy with his work and kids. I can go to the health center by bus, but getting an appointment is hard.
My work is also a problem. I work at a local restaurant, but because business is bad, the owner has cut down on my hours so I don't have as much money. He is a good man but he has to make a living, too.
I feel sad about the house. This is where I have raised my children with my husband who died three years ago. I have begun to go to church more often. I used to go once a month, but now I go every week. Maybe God can help me with my problems.
